Skate School Important Information
Lesson Day
-
Please arrive 20 minutes before the scheduled lesson to ensure you're ready and on the ice for the start of the class. At the start of the lesson, please skate to the coloured coned area. Our coaches cannot leave their lessons to collect students.
-
Children under 12 must be supervised by parents/guardians at all times while at iceHQ. Parents/guardians of teenages are expected to be nearby and reachable at all times in case of injury/emergency.
Parents/guardians are not permitted to sit on the players benches for the duration of skate school. This area is for students only. Everyone is welcome to watch from the grandstands or our heated upstairs lounge.
-
Ice skates and protective gear is available free of charge for your class. If you need assistance with fitting, please see our Skate Hire team.
-
Students are allocated 30 minutes of practice time either before or after their lesson. To avoid overcrowding, please make sure you are skating in the practice zone during your allocated time for the safety and comfort of other skaters. Please be mindful, students are sharing the space with younger and less experienced skaters, and spinning and jumping is not permitted.
-
It gets very chilly at iceHQ, please make sure you wear warm and comfortable clothing. Layered clothing, gloves and thick socks are recommended.
-
Our iceHQ cafe is open on the day of all lessons, before and after classes.
WHAT TO EXPECT THROUGHOUT THE TERM
-
Helmets are compulsory for all Aussie 1 and Tots classes. iceHQ has helmets for hire, free of charge in a range of sizes. You’re welcome to BYO bike helmet. If you need assistance with fitting, please see our Skate Hire team.
-
Weeks 1 and 2 of the term, may feel different to the remainder of the term. Our Coaches use the first two weeks to confirm students class allocations based on their current abilities. Students may find the first two weeks more fast paced as coaches progress through elements testing individual abilities. This ensures students are enrolled in their correct class by week 3. It is important all students are in attendance for their first week. Should students need to move a level, coaches will advise the student and the Skate School Coordinators.
-
Learn heaps, practice more! Our Skate School coaches design and modify their classes throughout the term depending on the needs of their students. Attending every class ensures you’re giving yourself the best opportunity for your own success. Students are unable to progress to higher levels, without the completion of each level.
-
Pre-Grading (4 weeks prior to the end of the term)
Speak with your coach about the elements you need to focus on to pass your level.Grading (Final two weeks of the term)
Our coaches follow a structured curriculum and are trained to assess readiness carefully, both for safety and to ensure skaters are set up for long-term success. Grading stands firm with the coach's decision on the level they believe the student should remain.Planned absences should be communicated with the coach & reception so we can arrange an early grading where possible.
It’s important to remember that repeating levels is a completely normal part of learning to skate. Everyone progresses at their own pace and it's not unusual to need more time on certain skills before moving up.

CHILD SAFETY AT ICEHQ
-
At iceHQ, Child Safety is our number 1 priority.
The Child Safe Standards aim to protect children and young people, by requiring organisations to put policies, procedures and processes in place to prevent and respond to abuse. They aim to make keeping children and young people safe a key focus of organisations in Victoria.
The Child Safe Standards help organisations to:
Promote the safety of children
Prevent child abuse
Ensure effective processes are in place to respond to and report allegations of child abuse
Encourage children to ‘have a say’, especially on issues that are important to them or about decisions that affect their lives.
All iceHQ coaches hold a current first aid certificate and valid working with children's check.
-
Under child safety laws, it is iceHQ responsibility to follow the national Child Safety Standards. If a coach is concerned the student is physically or emotionally unfit to complete the class, it is at the coaches discretion.
Parents/guardians of children under 12 MUST be present and actively supervising during their time at iceHQ.
To ensure a child seeks medical attention if an injury or fall occurs, you may be asked to take your child to an iceHQ first aider to be cleared to return to the class. Whether the parent believes the child is fine to return, it is at the coaches discretion.
With the coach in a class, the parent or guardian is responsible to take the child to a iceHQ first aider. If the first aider is unable to clear the student, you will be advised to see a doctor.
Refusal of first aid is grounds for a coach to dismiss a student from class.
If your child is in pain or upset, the coach will ask the parent/student to return next class when they are feeling better.
We do not tolerate abusive or offensive language towards our coaches and staff, and you will be asked to leave the premises if this behaviour occurs.
-
At iceHQ, we are here for you.
If you would like to make a complaint or report an incident, please email iceHQ’s Business Manager Alannah Bourke at alannah@icehq.com.au
A report form will be completed and viewed by our child safety officers at iceHQ.
Your complaint is confidential and will be discussed in depth with yourself, following an action plan you are comfortable to move ahead with.
